Bashaw RCMP arrest Ponoka man for Alix ATB robbery and snowmobile getaway

ALIX – Bashaw RCMP investigated an armed robbery at the Alix ATB and days later found their suspect in custody at the Ponoka RCMP detachment on an unrelated charge.

Michael Allan Richter, 40, of Ponoka was charged with 10 criminal offences in relation to the armed robbery including robbery with a firearm, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and two counts of failing to comply with a Probation Order.

On Dec. 24, the Bashaw RCMP with the assistance of Ponoka RCMP General Investigation Section obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s rural property, east of Ponoka. The search warrant was executed through the night into Dec. 25 by the Bashaw RCMP with the assistance of members from Ponoka and Maskwacis Detachments. Evidence linking the suspect to the armed robbery was collected.

At the time of his arrest, Richter was wanted on outstanding warrants for other matters. Richter was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Red Deer provincial court on Jan. 2, 2020.

Bashaw RCMP investigated an armed robbery that occurred this morning in Alix and said they saw the suspect flee on a snowmobile.

At 11:14 a.m., the RCMP responded to a 911 call of an armed robbery at the ATB Financial Agency on Dec. 20.

A man wearing a mask and gloves entered the branch with a long-barrelled firearm and a machete.  He demanded cash, and after receiving the cash fled with the undisclosed amount.

No employees were injured in this incident.

RCMP determined that the snowmobile was last known to be on Alix Lake.
