Health Canada has approved the first potential COVID-19 vaccination.
Speaking from Rideau Cottage, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters today that Canadian Centre for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University was given the go ahead by Health Canada to start clinical trials.
“Research and development take time and must be done right,” he said. “But this is encouraging news.”
Last week, Health Canada announced the first authorized COVID-19 antibody tests in Canada. They said about one million Canadian blood samples would be collected and tested over the next two years to track the Corona virus in the general population and in higher risk groups such as health-care workers and the elderly.
“Serological testing will contribute to a better understanding of whether people who have been infected by COVID-19 are immune to the virus,” said the Health Canada statement.
