Is that really the RCMP calling you?

BROOKS – Brooks RCMP are aware that citizens in the Brooks area are receiving fraudulent calls which include a ‘spoofed’ number associated to the Brooks RCMP.

Residents are warned to be aware of this spoofing and to not provide any personal information or pay any money.

Over the last few days, and increasingly on Thursday, Brooks RCMP were notified of culprits contacting victims alleging that they were from the RCMP and that the victim’s Social Insurance Number had been compromised.  Personal information was requested.

The RCMP reminds the public of some basic safety tips when it comes to safety and fraud prevention:

–       The RCMP will never ask you for money over the phone

–       The RCMP will not tell you to pay for anything using Bitcoin, other cryptocurrency, iTunes cards or other gift cards

–       The RCMP will never tell you to pay money or threaten to arrest you for tax fraud

–       The RCMP will never ask you for a Social Insurance Number

If you have been the recipient of one of these calls, please do not call 911.

If you believe that you have been involved in a similar incident, please contact Brooks RCMP at 403-794-4400 or your local police.

If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
