Lethbridge man, 50, dead after truck collides with train

At about 11:35 am, Brooks Fire Department, Brooks EMS, the CP Police, local Peace Officers, and Brooks RCMP, responded to a complaint of a motor vehicle collision involving a pickup truck and a CP Rail train at the railway crossing of Hwy 1A and Range Road 14-3 east of Brooks.

The investigation revealed a pickup truck with two occupants was northbound on the range road and failed to yield to an oncoming west bound train resulting in a significant collision. Both occupants of the truck were extricated and transported by ground ambulance to the Brooks Health Centre.

A short time later, the 50-year-old passenger from the Lethbridge area, succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.  The 60-year-old male driver of the truck, from Lethbridge, was air lifted via Halo Air Ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary with critical, life threatening injuries.

An RCMP collision re-constructionist attended the scene to assist in the investigation.  The rail line and the range road were closed for about three hours during the scene investigation but both have since re-opened.  The train sustained minimal damage, there was no loss of cargo, and no occupants on the train were injured.

The RCMP and the CP Police Service continue to jointly investigate this collision.
