WATCH: Peter MacKay launches Conservative leadership bid

Former MP Peter MacKay officially kicked off his leadership bid campaign today in Nova Scotia.

MacKay is a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was an MP from 1997 to 2015. He served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Minister of National Defence, and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of Canada under Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

MacKay was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in 2003 when they merged with the Canadian Alliance to form the current Conservative party. He stepped back from politics before the 2015 election.

MacKay posted a video on Twitter Friday saying he’s ready to take on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the next federal election.

The Conservative Party of Canada officially opened its 2020 Leadership election on Jan. 13.

Alberta-based businessman Rick Peterson who finished in twelfth place in the 2017 leadership race, is also running.

Other candidates include Ontario MP Derek Sloan, who is a lawyer, Richard Decarie, a social conservative from Quebec, Marilyn Gladu, an MP from southwestern Ontario.

Pierre Poilievre, Rona Ambrose and former Quebec premier Jean Charest have all withdrawn from the leadership race.

Candidates have until the end of February to apply to enter the race. They must raise $300,000 to stay in the race. That amount was only $100,000 in the 2017 leadership race.

The Conservatives will name their new leader in Toronto on June 27.
