POLL: Are you in favour of citizens carrying handguns to protect themselves like they are allowed to in Texas?
West Freeway Church of Christ Pastor Britt Farmer praised the Texas bill Senate Bill 535 that allows licensed handgun owners to carry weapons in churches and other places of worship.
He is the senior pastor of the church where two people were fatally shot Dec. 29.
Senate Bill 535 came into effect September 2019 and allows licensed handgun owners to legally carry their firearms in places of worship.
“We lost two great men today,” said West Freeway Church of Christ Pastor Britt Farmer during a televised press conference after the shooting Sunday. “It could have been a lot worse. I’m thankful that our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves.”
Likewise, in a news conference after the shooting, Tarrant County, Texas, Sheriff Bill Waybourn praised the actions of the parishioners carrying guns.
“Evil walked boldly among us today but let me remind you, good people raised up and stopped it before it got worse.
And Texas Governor Greg Abbott also praised the fast-acting gun-toting parishioners.
“Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life.”
