Ponoka man arrested after Ponoka woman murdered

PONOKA – On Nov. 5 at 9:25 p.m., the Ponoka RCMP and EMS responded to a 911 call of an injured woman at a residential complex in Ponoka.  Chantelle Firingstoney, 26, of Ponoka, Alta. was located deceased. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

An autopsy was completed by the Medical Examiner’s Office and the death was ruled a homicide.

Ryan Applegarth, 28, of Ponoka was taken into custody by responding members. He has been charged with second-degree murder. His first appearance is scheduled for Nov. 13 at Ponoka Provincial Court.

Applegarth is also accused in connection to a January 2020 homicide case. According to a January 2020 press release from RCMP K Division spokesperson Cpl. Laurel Scott said, “On Jan. 3, 2020 the Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a homicide in the city of Wetaskiwin. An investigation conducted by the Major Crimes Unit has led to first degree murder charges against Ryan Jake Applegarth (27).”

It is not believed that there is any continuing public safety concern.  This is believed to be an isolated incident.
