Wetaskiwin RCMP to promote a Safe Exchange Site Program

WETASKIWIN – Wetaskiwin RCMP in Partnership with the City of Wetaskiwin By-Law Enforcement Services have set up a safe exchange site for residents to buy and sell goods from internet transactions, such as purchases set up through websites like Facebook, Kijiji and/or Craigslist etc.

Now, Wetaskiwin residents can go to the parking lot of the Wetaskiwin RCMP at 5005- 48 Avenue in Wetaskiwin to complete legal transactions initiated online – the area is marked with a sign and it is recommended that those wishing to use this area do so during daylight hours.

“With property crime and Covid-19 an ongoing concern for residents of Wetaskiwin, we wanted to provide the public with a space to complete these transactions rather than having strangers attend their personal residences or work locations, limiting the exposure and providing a safe area to meet,” said Cst. Shaun Marchand.

“Officers will not assist with the transfer or verify the authenticity or serial numbers of the item(s), but are nearby should something criminal occur. People should also bring another family member or friend. Always inspect an item before committing to buy it, and never accept cheques or a money wire transfers.”

Serial numbers can be checked to see if something has been reported stolen on the Canadian Police Information Centre’s online database.
