BLACKFALDS – The Town of Blackfalds unveiled its concept drawing last week of the future arena expansion.
The town wants for more public input through a short survey available on the town’s website at www.blackfalds.com/tourism-recreation/multi-plex-ice-arena.
Website visitors can view a gallery of conceptual renderings of the new ice surface as well as the second phase of the project; a new home for the library. The expansion also includes various community spaces, combining arts and culture with recreational programming.
While the expansion requires municipal funding, the town is also looking for sponsorships, naming rights and other groups who may want to help.
Construction costs have already been built into the town’s long-range capital plan.
The expansion will cost around $15 million for the arena and is on track to be built in 2021. The library is the second phase, which is estimated to cost 4 million and projected to be built in 2024.
The project has had widespread support including from the Dual Ice Development Society (D.I.D.S) who have committed to raise $1 million through various fundraising efforts, most recently through the Raise the Rink fundraiser which raised $40K.
