‘Spoofers’ take over several Red Deer businesses’ phone lines

RED DEER – Some Red Deer businesses were “spoofed” by prank phone calls.

Alleged scammers took over some businesses fax and internet lines and made random calls to unsuspecting residents between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Monday night.

One business with the last four digits of 2222 — the same as the Redcliff RCMP detachment, which was also spoofed this week.

The scammers also made calls in Redcliff using the last four numbers 2222, which is the same as the Redcliff police. But when anyone answered the call there was just dead air. If the person called the number that was displayed, 403-548-2222, he/she ended up with the Redcliff RCMP complaint line.

Anyone who received a spam call can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit their website at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
